CHAPTER TEN

Danny left to go back to his training group. Jack laid down his sword on the table and watched him go, wondering how he could get out of the mess he was in.

A green soldier approached Jack and Collin. “Follow me,” he said in the high, wavery voice of the Anronites. With a claw, he indicated the gold building in the distance.

Jack grabbed his backpack. He and Collin followed the soldier onto the busy grounds of the fortress.

As he moved, Jack’s mind whirled. If there was no darkness in this part of Anron, it wouldn’t do any good to wait until so-called night to try and free Minron. They’d have to do their best in broad daylight.

Another soldier ran up to them. The two Anronites spoke rapidly in their own tongue, and then one of the soldiers left.

“I have to go. Grun’s orders,” their guard said. “A Wuffaron has been seen.”

“A Wuffaron?” said Jack. “What’s that?”

The guard’s green skin above his eyes folded into layers of worried wrinkles. “Wuffarons are magical four-legged creatures. Some say they are the ghosts of good creatures who seek out evil. Grun insists we capture it, so our battle will go well tomorrow.”

Jack’s jaw dropped. Had it been a Wuffaron who’d shared a room with them during the night?

“Go directly to the gold building,” ordered the guard. “Others will meet you there.”

Waving his sword in the air, the soldier dashed away.

Jack’s lips curved as he watched the guard jog away. He turned to Collin. “This is the opening I’ve been waiting for. Let’s go!”

They took off at a run.

Inside the building, men were rushing about. Shouted orders were repeated in echoes against the stone walls of the interior.

Jack and Collin darted down a hallway, hiding in doorways. Soldiers, armed with swords, marched by, too busy to pay attention to them.

At the end of the hallway, they looked for signs of straggling soldiers. All clear. They slipped into the darkness of the stairway that descended into the depths of the building.

“I’ll follow you,” Jack said to Collin. He stumbled in the dark, hating the feeling of being enclosed.

Collin began counting. His whispered words grew softer and softer as he drew away from Jack.

“Wait for me!”

Jack could hardly see as they traveled downward, one step after another. The damp, musty smell of the cellar made his nose twitch. He rubbed it, jumpy at the thought of sneezing. The stairway ended and broke into three directions.

Collin paused. “I think we go to the right.”

“Are you sure?” said Jack.

Collin frowned. “I think so.”

Moving swiftly, they followed the curves and twists of the passageway.

Jack hoped his brother was right. If a guard came along, there was no way out.

They arrived at the wide metal door leading into the prison cells. Jack let out a sigh of relief, fell to his knees and searched for the key Danny had hidden.

“Hurry up!” whispered Collin. “I hear footsteps in the distance.”

Jack patted all around the door, becoming more and more frantic. “The key’s not here!”

Collin’s face fell.
